Afstudeeronderzoek: Walking a tightrope across the gap of digital preservation and environmental sustainability

(EN) In response to the National Climate Agreement of the Netherlands, the National Archives of the Netherlands (NANETH) needs to become more environmentally sustainable in every part of the organisation. This includes the category IT & Data storage (and thus the digital archive). How can NANETH responsibly reduce without sacrificing the necessary digital sustainability? Taking the first step towards a green digital archive, this paper describes several examples of more climate-friendly considerations in digital preservation. Described cases tackle emulation versus migration as a method to preserve access to digital objects, preservation tools for performing impact assessments, and fixity checking to preserve the integrity of the digital objects, resulting in realistic advice for NANETH. This paper is also intended to be an open appeal to the international GLAM sector to be aware of the impact of the digital archive on the environment, and that further research on minimising our digital footprint is highly required.

(NL) Als reactie op het Klimaatakkoord moet het Nationaal Archief milieuvriendelijker worden in elk onderdeel van de organisatie. Hieronder valt ook de categorie IT & Dataopslag (en daarmee het digitale archief). Hoe kan het Nationaal Archief op een verantwoorde manier verminderen zonder dat dit ten koste gaat van de noodzakelijke digitale duurzaamheid? Als eerste stap in de richting van een groen digitaal archief beschrijft dit onderzoek verschillende voorbeelden van klimaatvriendelijke overwegingen in digitale preservering. Beschreven cases behandelen emulatie versus conversie als methode om de toegang tot digitale objecten te behouden, preservation tools voor het uitvoeren van impact assessments en fixity checking om de integriteit van de digitale objecten te bewaken. Dit verslag is ook bedoeld als een open oproep aan de internationale GLAM-sector om zich bewust te zijn van de impact van het digitale archief op het milieu, en dat verder onderzoek naar het minimaliseren van onze digitale voetafdruk hoogst noodzakelijk is.
