In many research contexts, research data is kept for a minimum retention period of around ten years. But what happens after that? Life After Ten explores what is needed to ensure research data remains accessible and valuable beyond that initial retention period.

Following our first There is Life After Ten event earlier this year, LCRDM, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) are bringing together a small group of colleagues from the research data community for a practical follow-up workshop.

Our first event explored how FAIR, TRUST and digital preservation can work together to support research data over the longer term. This follow-up moves the conversation into practice.

Taking place on World Digital Preservation Day 2026, the day will focus on developing a digital preservation policy and considering what is needed to make that policy work within your organization. With a maximum of 30 participants, the workshop will provide space for active discussion, collaboration and knowledge sharing. Participants will work on the foundations of an effective digital preservation policy before choosing an afternoon workshop focused either on building support for that policy or putting it into practice through workflows and processes.
